CARR Launches Pop-Up Senior Care Coaching Clinics
San Diego has a multitude of referring agencies in the private and public sectors offering older adults and their families resources about care options and planning. What our community lacks is a program exclusively focused on empowering and educating older adults how to successfully navigate the aging network and troubleshoot dead ends.
This Pop-Up Coaching Clinic program was developed in response to calls CARR continues to receive from seniors and families frustrated by "dead-end" referrals ("dead-ends" include ineligibility for programs, limited confidence to narrow down choices and/or verifying quality) and feedback from senior community centers unable to handle the volume of inquiries from older attendees.
Launched this March, CARR gerontologists, Chris Murphy and Christina Selder, will be conducting Pop-up Senior Care Coaching Clinics throughout San Diego, starting in Balboa Park, San Ysidro, and La Jolla. The clinics are open to the public and aim to give older adults in our community greater confidence and clarity. Each attendee will leave their session with a tangible checklist, suggested timeline and contact information for resources to empower action. Attendees will also receive ongoing support from CARR through a 60-day follow-up and anytime via phone or email.
The program’s secondary function is to explore the most pressing concerns of San Diego’s seniors. CARR will be surveying attendees to collect data on the needs, preferences, and opinions of individual community members who are actively considering senior care options. CARR will use this local data to compile a database of issues addressed during sessions, resources provided, barriers to access and additional support required to secure services. CARR will share the results of the Clinics with the public to encourage dialogue on the needs of older adults within specific communities.
