A Consumer's Guide to Making Funeral Arrangements

Advice for Grieving Families

(by Rebecca Ruiz)

Coming to terms with the death of a loved one is difficult, especially when few decisions were made ahead of time about a loved one’s wishes for funeral arrangements. In an effort to make this time easier, The California Department of Consumer Affair’s Cemetery and Funeral Bureau created a “Consumer Guide to Funeral and Cemetery Purchases” to inform family members about their options and rights during the funeral and burial decision-making process.

This guide provides information on relevant laws, regulations, the legal aspects of decision-making, and lists all the possible steps and options that may apply during this process. It also encourages folks to make arrangements in advance to avoid having family members make these decisions during the grieving process.  It is during this vulnerable time that families may be taken advantage of by business offering these services.
