2 November, Monday Ms Selder will be back at Oasis, this time conducting a hands on session on how to research the public documents on assisted living facilities: Using the Web to Research Assisted Living Facilities. Again, registration is required, and this 1.5 hour class begins at 10:30am.
15 September. Association of University Women's Policy committee were enriched by the Chrisy Selder's presentation on grass roots advocacy and legislative initiatives promoted by CARR. Specifically she discussed success with AB 1523 (Atkins) and our current efforts for transparency with sole sponsorship of AB 1122 (Brown).

5 August, La Mesa-Foothills Democratic Club hosted Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins, and co-billed with her was CARR. CARR's Chrisy Selder discussed for the large crowd (over 75 participants) CARR's sole sponsorship of AB 1523 (Atkins) and how, partnered with Ms. Atkins advocacy of our bill led to statutory reform: a requirement that all RCFEs carry liability insurance as a condition of licensure.
15 July ECAN General Meeting, This meeting is free and open to the public. Meeting begins 1:00 and runs through 3:00 PM. Chris Murphy will speak on 2015 RCFE legislation, and the county's assisted living rating system initiative.
27 June, Sharp Hospice Education Conference. CARR will be attending as an exhibitor, educating Sharp hospice and allied professionals with our services and capabilities. We are pleased to be invited back for our 3rd year. Event is for invited Sharp employees only.
17 June - Vital Aging Conference, Liberty Station and Escondido Venues. CARR will be an exhibitor at the premier event on aging and aging issues sponsored by County of San Diego, Aging and Independence Services. Plan on attending, but be sure to make your free reservations. The event attracts 1,500 at the Liberty Station venue and approximately 500 at the Escondido venue. 9 June, Teamster's Local 481. At this event, CARR's ED introduced the organization to the membership of Teamster's Local 481. Our ED was met by a large and warm audience - surprising since the meeting was held at the end of a long day. CARR welcomes other union speaking engagements.
6 May, SDSU CARR's Executive Director will be speaking to a Gerontology and Social Services students on the continuum of care, and about CARR's consumer advocacy work. We always love speaking to students about our work and appreciate this opportunity provided by Dr. Anguera.
6 May, Las Primeras CARR's co-founders will be speaking to the membership of Las Primeras on CARR's beginnings, our work and our legislative advocacy efforts. We are honored to have been asked to speak to this wonderful organization of philanthropists.

1 April, 2014, San Diego Chapter, National Association of Geriatric Care Managers. This 45 minute presentation followed by 15 minutes Q&A is a members-only meeting. Chris will be speaking about CARR's mission, services of the website, regulatory gaps and enforcement issues.
27 March, 2014, East County Elder Abuse Council, La Mesa Community Center, 11:30 to 1:00. Chris will be giving a short summary of RCFE reform bills pending in the California legislature. This event is open to the public.
This presentation will be held in the community room of the Carmel Valley Branch Library. We're hoping for a good turnout to hear about how to shop for assisted living, what to watch for, and what to watch out for and more. This event is free and open to the public. Presentation will be about 40 to 45 minutes, with 15 minutes for questions.
This 30 minute presentation (including Q&A) will cover shopping for assisted living, and absues to elders we see, through our investigation of the pubic record. This is a member's only event, so try to catch us at another venue.
10 December 2013, San Diego Ombudsman's Training. CARR's C. Selder will present CARR, and introduce CARR's website as a tool for Ombudsman in San Diego county. CARR is very pleased to be able to speak to this important group of volunteers who are regular visitors to local RCFEs. 20 November, 2013, Gerontology Society of America - 66th Annual Conference, New Orleans, LA. Chrisy's paper "The Age-in-Place Disparity of Assisted Living: Medical Needs in Non-Medical Facilities" was accepted by the GSA for presentation. Her paper is based on research conducted on the data available from the public documents on CARR's site - evidence of CARR's research in action. Congratulations to Chrisy on this achievement.

Presentation will be on the combination of gaps and regulatory facts which combine to increase a resident's health and safety risk when living in an assisted living facility.
13 June 2013, Vital Aging 2013 at San Marcos Community Center. Sponsored by County of San Diego, Aging and Independence Services, this is always the premier community event promoting health aging through diet, staying active, and staying interested. This year's event will be no exception. Deborarh Szekely, founder of Rancho La Puerta and the Golden Door Spa, a 92 year old Wellness Warrior will be a keynote speaker. And CARR will be an exhibitor at the event. Watch for more details in the next month. Registration through AIS is generally required, even though your attendance is free.

This workshop educates attendees on what to look for & be aware of when shopping for an assisted living facility & empowers them to ask critical questions. This 1.5 hour workshop was attended by approximately 70 individuals last fall. Participant feedback indicated the information was "eye-opening" and "most useful". Information covered includes: the continuum of long-term care, needs assessment, services offered by assisted living, pitfalls of facilities, and a segment on state licensure and enforcement practices. 29 November 2012: Toby Wells YMCA CARR's Chris Murphy will be the presenter for our workshop "Shopping vs Being Sold To" a discussion about how to actively taken control of your shopping experience when looking for assisted living placement. There are many questions you should ask the Licensee; this workshop walks you through the things you should understand before you start asking questions of the Licensee, and then suggests key questions you'll want to ask before selecting a facility. 10 August 2012: Golden Age Gardens. Awesome experience and huge thank yous to Mario for arranging the event, for wonderful flyers at the site, and especially for the amazing translations. It was a wonderful audience - and thanks for inviting CARR. For the residents of Golden Age Gardens, CARR presented "Supportive Housing Options" at 12:30 pm. This presentation explored the types of supportive housing available to those needing more assistance with activities of daily living, and the pros and cons of each. CARR's goal is always to make sure consumers have clear information about their options so they can make informed placement decisions.
18 June 2012: Oasis Workshop, How to Use Public Documents to Inform your Assisted Living Placement, conducted, again by Chrisy Selder at Oasis' Mission Valley location. We had good response from our ~ 30 participants to this in-depth workshop on how to read the public documents on our site, and what information from the public document that the consumer needs to know.
15 June 2012: CARR participated in the Live Well San Diego Expo held at Town and County Convention Center on 15 June. So many people - a couple of thousand were in attendance to hear Richard Dreyfuss' keynote speech. CARR had many wonderful and interested consumers stop its table. We offered community outreach information and demonstrations of our website. In addition we were able to answer consumer questions about RCFE's. To all those who dropped by to say Hi, we really appreciate your interest.

12 May 2012: LGBT Resource Fair at The Centre, 3909 Center Street, San Diego. CARR will be outreaching to the LGBT community by providing consumer educational materials and website demonstrations. This was a great event, attended by about 150 community members. It was beautifully organized, hats off to LaRue Field! and offered a wide range of services and agencies - each offering important services for seniors.
